On June 6th, 2023, Mayor Matt Tuerk of Allentown made a public proclamation recognizing the important impact the Sixth Street Shelter has on our community, by providing assistance to families experiencing homelessness. June 6th was publicly proclaimed as "Sixth Street Shelter Day," and the plaque we received to make the occasion hangs proudly inside the building. We now celebrate every year on June 6th!

In recognition of the Shelter’s history, the incredible work done by the staff, volunteers, and supporters, and the successes of the many guests who have stayed with us throughout the years.

Charles Mallone, a curator and scholar who focuses on the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania Germans with a special emphasis on the Moravians and other intentional communities, will present on the topic “The Muhlenberg Family and the Lutheran Church in Early Pennsylvania.”

Join us as we view The Fries Rebellion produced by the Lower Macungie Historical Society in anticipation of America250 celebrations to be held nationwide in 2026.

In this docudrama, places and events of the Fries Rebellion are seen through the eyes of a modern schoolgirl. Audiences of all ages will be entertained and informed about an insurrection that occurred in 1798-1799, primarily in the German-speaking populations in and surrounding the “Lehigh Hills” region of then Northampton, eastern Berks, upper Bucks, and upper Montgomery counties of Pennsylvania. Several of the scenes will be feature original sites that still exist, including the Red Lion Inn (formerly Enoch Robert's Tavern - Quakertown), Jamision Publick House (formerly Conrad Mark's Tavern - Geryville), Hendrixson's furniture store (formerly John Shymer's Tavern - Shimersville), Buckeye Tavern (formerly Henry Shankweiler's Tavern - Macungie), 1760 House (formerly Peter Trexler's Tavern - Trexlertown), Commix Hotel (formerly Martin Ritter's Tavern - Allentown), and the 1758 Sun Inn (Bethlehem).
